Asphalt shingles

An asphalt shingle is a type of roof shingle. This is one of the most highly used roofing covers in the United States today due to low cost and the ease of installation. Your local roofer in Austin should be able to help you make a decision as there are many colors and textures.

There are two types of asphalt shingles: fiberglass and organic. Organic shingles are made with a base mat of formerly living materials such as paper, cellulose, wood fiber or other materials saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof, then a top coating of adhesive is added and ceramic granules are embedded. Fiberglass shingles have a base layer of glass fiber reinforcing mat. The mat is made from wet, random-laid fiberglass bonded a resin base and then coated with asphalt to make the fiberglass shingle waterproof.

Asphalt shingles have varying qualities which help them to survive wind, hail or fire damage and discoloration. Here are some qualities you may want to think about and consider when thinking about asphalt shingles as your roof covering:

  • Various shapes and textures of asphalt shingles are available.

  • Solar reflecting asphalt shingles area available. These help reduce air conditioning costs in climates with higher temperatures by being a better reflecting service. This is a plus when talking about the Austin area.

  • Hail storms can damage asphalt shingles. When living in an area that has a high hail probability, there are shingles available that will help your roof and covering to survive.

  • Certain shingle types have a greater chance of surviving a roof fire. Fiberglass shingles are a better choice for fire resistance.

  • Algae is not believed to damage asphalt shingles however it may not be pleasing to look at. Different treatment methods are used to prevent discoloration fro algae growth on the roof. Moss feeds on algae and any other debris on the roof.

  • There are shingles that are designed to lock together. They are referred to as tie lock or T-lock.

  • Asphalt shingles are durable and can carry a warranty period from 20 years to lifetime.

Shingles to tend to last longer in areas where the weather stays consistent. Thermal shock can damage shingles. This happens when the ambient temperature changes drastically in a short period of time.

Moss and debris that remain on shingles can cause premature deterioration. These shingles should be physically removed from the roof or removed with copper sulfate, zinc chloride or other solution and carefully applied and thoroughly rinsed. To prevent algae and moss growth, install copper strips or wires at the ridge every four to six feet down the roof. Black algae growth can be cleaned with a bleach solution. Cleaning can be harsh and abrasive to the shingles. It is best to contact your local roofer in Austin to help with algae and moss removal.

While there is a lot to think about when either replacing shingles or have a whole new shingled roof installed, it is important to talk with your local roofer in Austin to help you make those important decisions.
